The key specifications

  • Price: $180 from on.com
  • Sizing and fit: Wide fit; if you have average sized feet I recommend going 0.5 size down as they’ll fit better in length and width. The Cloudmonster 2 is wider than the previous version.
  • Weight: 10.2 oz (289g) for a size US(M)9 (my pair).
  • Drop: 6mm.
  • Toe box width: Wide.
  • Stability: They’re a very stable shoe, much more so than the original Cloudmonster which did have a lot of lateral roll due to all that monstrous midsole cushioning.
  • Cushioning: Medium cushioning – not maximum like their website says.
  • Best for: everyday training and tempo runs.

Hey everyone, I’m Alastair from Trail & Kale, and I’m excited to finally be able to share my On Cloudmonster 2 review with you all, because weirdly, it’s not the running shoe I thought it would be and anyone who has run in, and loved the original Cloudmonster needs to hear this.

On Cloudmonster 2 Review 11

After lacing up and hitting my local running route (watch my YouTube video below to get an inside look at where I run) with this latest model, I’ve been buzzing with excitement to share my thoughts.

The original Cloudmonster quickly climbed to the top of my list of the best On running shoes, setting a high bar for its successor, so naturally, I was eager to see how the Cloudmonster 2 stacks up against its predecessor.

From my runs so far, I can tell you it’s a vastly different experience, and the MONSTER has very much been tamed. Now, don’t get me wrong, it’s not about being better or worse, it’s about how the Cloudmonster 2 carves out its unique spot in the running world, which I’ll dive deeper into shortly.

The features of the Cloud Monster 2 that I love, and how they help improve performance

Kicking off this review on a high note, the shoe’s upper construction is a standout feature worth mentioning first.

Its breathability is exceptional, something I appreciated immediately upon trying them on, and it’s very similar to the previous version on this shoe.

The lightweight mesh upper pairs beautifully with a lacing system designed for a snug fit, ensuring your foot is comfortably secured from the get-go.

However, the shoe’s width will be a double-edged sword for many runners – those with wide feet, will appreciate this design and it will come as a welcomed attribute, offering ample space to accommodate a broader foot without feeling constrained.

My experience, though, revealed that the generous width resulted in a too much room for my medium-width feet, leading to movement within the shoe during runs – and I wasn’t even wearing thin performance running socks.

It’s not a significant concern, but for those with narrower feet, considering a half size smaller will provide a much better fit.

Moving on to the outsole, an aspect that deserves its own spotlight; the outsole design, featuring a shallower central groove pattern, prevents gravel and small debris from getting lodged in the shoes, whereas the previous Cloudmonster did manage to pick up rocks, so this is a notable improvement over its predecessor.

This upgraded design enhances the shoe’s versatility, making it suitable for running on both gravel paths and smooth tarmac without missing a beat, as you can see from my YouTube video review above.

Features that I feel could be improved for the next Cloudmonster

One notable change in the new Cloudmonster 2 that caught my attention is the absence of a loop on the tongue.

Let me just rephrase that; the tongue has no mechanism to help keep it in place, and not falling down.

The previous Cloudmonster did not have a loop for the laces to go through either but it didn’t slip down I’ve been experiencing with this one.

the image above shows what I mean there, and I demonstrate this better in my video near the top of this review.

This might seem like a minor detail, but its impact on the shoe’s functionality is significant, as it’s a nuisance that requires frequent adjustments. This design oversight is somewhat surprising, especially considering this issue wasn’t present in the previous model.

It’s a slight letdown from On, given their track record of thoughtful design.

Additionally, the shoe doesn’t deliver the same level of bounce and playful energy that characterized its predecessor.

The original Cloudmonster stood out for its unique, lively ride, setting it apart from the crowd and making it a fantastic tempo running shoe.

Unfortunately, this latest version dials back on that bounciness in favor of stability and support. While this shift might be beneficial for runners in search of a more stable shoe, it moves away from the distinctive, fun aspect that made the Cloudmonster a favorite of mine, and so many other runners out there.

So be warned, if you’re a runner who owns the Cloudmonster, this new version does not provide that same fun, bouncy feel anymore.

The midsole now feels firmer and slightly heavier, altering the overall experience.

Despite these critiques, it’s important to acknowledge that this is still a very good running shoe, provided you get the sizing right for your feet.

The Cloudmonster 2 offers increased stability and support, making it a solid choice for those who prioritize these features. However, for those of us who were enchanted by the original Cloudmonster’s unique charm, this iteration, while still high-quality, misses the mark in recapturing that same thrill.

It’s a bit disappointing to see it lose its spot at the top due to these changes, but it remains a commendable option for many runners.

On Cloudmonster 2 review summary

Alright then, it’s time to wrap up this review, as it’s getting late in the day and today’s (8th Feb) my birthday, so there’s a beer with my name on it waiting for me in our living room. ๐Ÿ˜„

For those in search of a running shoe that offers a stable platform with a wide fit, a breathable, lightweight upper, and a responsive midsole, this shoe might just be for you.

Additionally, the grip has proven reliable, especially noteworthy after the recent heavy rains in California, providing a secure footing in wet conditions. However, contrary to what the On running website might suggest, I wouldn’t classify this as a maximum cushion shoe.

While it boasts a decent stack height that protects your feet, it doesn’t deliver the plush, bouncy feel of its predecessor.

Regarding value for money, the $180 price tag feels steep. The original On Cloudmonster offered a unique experience that justified its cost, but this newer model, leaning towards middle of the road safety, and stability, doesn’t quite hit the same mark for me. In my opinion, a more fitting price point would be in the $140-$150 range.
