DJI Power 1000 review | Trail & Kale Running Co.

Having reviewed a wide variety of portable power stations here at Trail & Kale, and an owner of various DJI products in the past, (including two drones and DJI Mic) I was excited to get my hands on this new DJI portable power station and explore how it stacks up against the competition.

In this DJI Power 1000 review I’m covering the key specifications, what uses it’s best suited to, and what it’s like to use.

DJI Power 1000 Key Specifications

The DJI Power 1000 is engineered for versatility and high demand, featuring a range of power outputs to accommodate different needs. Here’s a quick overview of its capabilities:

  • Cost: $999, currently discounted to $699 for its launch, when bought directly from DJI.com
  • Capacity: 1024 Wh
  • Output: 2200W maximum, with a peak of 4400W
  • Ports: Multiple outputs including two 140W USB-C ports, two 24W USB-A ports, and two standard AC outlets
  • High Output Capacity: Offers a maximum output of 2200W, with surge capability for high-demand appliances.
  • Charging Time: Fully recharges in 70 minutes with 1200W Fast Recharge Mode
  • LCD Display: Provides essential information such as power input/output, battery level, and estimated run time, allowing for effective power management.
  • Ultra-Quiet Operation: Operates at a noise level lower than most home refrigerators, rated at 23 dB during fast recharging, which is typically one of its noisiest functions.
  • Support for Solar Charging: Can connect to DJI’s Power Solar Panel Adapter Module (available separately) for efficient solar charging.

In addition to the portable power station itself, I have a 100W solar panel and a purpose-built DJI protective storage bag for the power station. The bag, surprisingly or not, is actually a really useful accessory to own – more on that later in this review.

About DJI

You’ve probably heard of DJI if you’re into, or have every come across their compact drones.

Since its establishment, DJI has expanded from primarily a drone company to a leader in several tech categories. For example, at Trail & Kale Running Co we use other DJI gadgets including their excellent wireless microphones, when filming video reviews for our YouTube Channel. Every DJI product we have owned or tested has always been very well designed and built.

With the recent launch of portable power stations such as the Power 1000 and its smaller sibling, the Power 500, DJI is making the logical move into providing consumers with high-quality power stations that are capable of charging and powering gadgets, whether they’re cameras, phones, laptops, drones or refrigerators… or anything else you may want to power with one.

Battery Life; How Long Does the DJI Power 1000 Last?

The DJI Power 1000’s capacity and efficient power management allow it to serve a wide range of energy needs. Here are some examples to give an indication of how much you could do with it on a full charge:

  • Smartphones: Approximately 57 full charges, OR
  • Laptops: Up to 9 full charges, OR
  • Car refrigerators: About 19 hours of operation.

There are a load more examples and scenarios on the DJI website showing how you can use it for powering and charging gadgets and devices.

Personally, I’ve been using it the most for charging my phone and laptop, as well as devices such as our Rocky Talkies, camera batteries and wireless microphones that we use here at Trail & Kale Running Co when filming video reviews.

In terms of how long the unit will last in its lifetime, the DJI Power 1000 uses lithium ferrophosphate (LFP) battery cells, which are known for their longevity and safety. The documentation states that these cells can maintain over 80% capacity after 3000 charge cycles.

This means you can expect the DJI Power 1000 to handle around 3000 full charges before it begins to show significant deterioration in battery capacity – and even then, it would be maintaining over 80% capacity, or over 800Wh, from a charge – the company states you should be able to get at least 4000 cyles from this unit – that’s a hell of a lot of charges.

How Many Devices Can the Power 1000 Charge at Once?

The Power 1000 can simultaneously power multiple devices thanks to its diverse output options. So you can have items plugged into the 120v outlet as well as the 12v and USB-C outlets, for example.

With its 2200w maximum output, it’s perfectly capable of simultaneously charging or running various types of equipment, from small cameras to larger appliances, without the worry of overloading the system. Just don’t go attempting to run something power-intensive on it, like a hairdryer, induction cooktop or other heating or cooling device – that’s not what this power station was designed for!

This portable power station sits right in the sweet spot of what I would describe as the most versatile and useful portable power stations. Much smaller, and there isn’t enough usage time (watt-hours) between needing a recharge. Trust me, I know – some smaller power stations will only charge a laptop and a couple of small devices before running out of juice.

Much larger, and while you are likely to get a beefier wattage and more watt-hours of battery, the power stations start to get very heavy and less portable.

So, the DJI Power 1000 manages to sit comfortably in the middle. You can take it in your car or camping no problem, it stores in a closet when you don’t need it at home, and it has enough power and battery storage to be useful in a wide range of scenarios.

How to Recharge the DJI Power 1000

Charging the DJI Power 1000 is flexible and efficient, with several methods available:

  1. Power Socket: Utilizes a 1200W Fast Recharge Mode for a full charge within 70 minutes.
  2. Solar Power: Can be connected to solar panels through the DJI Power Solar Panel Adapter Module, ideal for sustained off-grid use.
  3. Car Charger: Capable of charging via a vehicleโ€™s 12V outlet, making it perfect for road trips and remote shoots.

Yes, you read that first point correctly, it takes just over an hour and it’s fully charged… and it probably won’t be completely depleted when you plug it in to charge it in the first place – so you can get the battery topped up again in less than an hour, in most scenarios.

Useful accessories for the DJI Power 1000

I mentioned earlier in this review that I have the purpose-built protective storage bag for this portable power station. Now, you may be wondering, why is she so excited about a BAG? Well, having reviewed many portable power stations over the years, it’s a common theme that they come with at least one, if not multiple cables and adaptors – and yet, you have nowhere to store them neatly organized with the power bank itself.

Not an issue here – this bag has dedicated pockets, as well as openings specifically designed to allow the unit to vent (they generate heat when working) and to allow you to see and access the outlets and screen.

It also, of course, helps protect your power station from the elements and being knocked about while being stored, used or taken off-grid. Definitely worth getting if you’re thinking of ordering a power station.

The DJI Power 1000 and its solar panel pack up neatly into the protective bag and solar panels' integrated cover, respectively. Great for portability!

The solar panels are also a great investment if you’re interested in having a way to charge your power station while off the grid, whether that’s on a photo shoot, camping, fishing… any scenario you can think of.

Cost and Where to Buy

The DJI Power 1000 is available for $999, directly from DJI, although it’s currently discounted to $699 at the time of writing this review!

This is truly great value for money for everything you’re getting with this versatile, well-made unit from a reputable brand such as DJI. The power station also comes with a 5 year warranty for peace of mind.
