Runner Interview: Piotr Babis

When and why did you start running?

I have been running for 4 years when I moved to London. I liked it so much that I decided to sign up for the Manchester Marathon. It was my very first race with only 6 months of training.

Describe your ideal race or adventure challenge

Every race that challenges me and allows me to push my limits.

Tell us about your favourite trail

East End of Rundle in Canmore. It is a 20km run with 1400m of elevation gain and
absolutely amazing views from the top of the mountain.

I missed the turn and ran an additional 2 km. I still had a good race and finished 5th…

What has been your biggest running / adventure challenge to date?

Finishing a full Ironman. It was my dream for a couple of years. At that point I did not know how to swim and did not have any cycling experience.
Running marathon after 3.8 km of swimming and 180 km of biking is a unique experience.

Tell us about your greatest running fail, we’ve all had – or will have – them at some point!

It was during my 1st ultra-run when I missed the turn and ran an additional 2 km. I still had a good race and finished 5th, but it was a bit frustrating and I could have finished 3rd.

What advice would you give to a new trail runner?

Run in a place that makes you feel happy.

What is your favourite bit of running kit, and why?

MP3 player with my favorite tunes.

What challenges / races / adventures are you planning for the coming year?

My main focus will be Calgary Marathon. I would like to finish it under 3 hours, which will allow me to earn a spot for one of most prestigious Marathons.
I am also thinking of doing 100km run.

Finally, What do you get up to when you’re not running or adventuring?

Training and full time job takes most of my time. Whatever I have left I try to spend it with my girlfriend or friends.
