Why you need a puffy poncho
Rumpl puffy ponchos are a twist on the brand’s popular puffy insulated down and recycled synthetic fill blankets, which we’ve also reviewed here on Trail & Kale – the Original Rumpl blanket as well as the spark-resistant Nanoloft Flame blanket.
While Rumpl’s puffy blankets come with a ‘cape clip’ that enables you to wear the blanket around your shoulders hands-free, the poncho takes the wearable puffy blanket to the next level.
The situations and use cases where you may enjoy and get good use out of a puffy poncho are pretty much limited only to your creativity.
Popular reasons you may want (or indeed, need) a puffy poncho include:
- Evenings around the campfire when the air turns chilly
- Layering quickly to take the dog for a walk
- Camping
- Van life
- Surfing or beach days
- Sitting watching a game or fishing when a cool breeze hits, or
- Simply on your sofa watching Netflix on a cold winter’s night!
Key features
Like Rumpl’s insulated puffy blankets, the Rumpl puffy ponchos are lightweight and highly packable.
Packability
One of the cool features about these ponchos is that they easily pack down into their own pocket, ready for packing in a backpack or storing.
Once packed, the poncho also makes a great camping pillow, so it’s a handy multi-functional piece of gear if you do take one camping.
Recycled, waterproof materials
The 100% recycled ripstop polyester fabric body is treated with DWR to prevent it from soaking through at the first sign of rain, and the hood and shoulders are designed to be waterproof.
That said, if it rains heavily, at some point the poncho will get soaked through, so it’s not the same level of waterproofing as you’ll get from wearing a fully waterproof jacket in a downpour.
Color options
Like Rumpl’s blankets, you can get these ponchos in a range of bright colors and patterns. We’re modeling a pair of particularly bright designs in the photos throughout this review.
Sizes and fit
The puffy ponchos come in two loose gender-neutral sizes, Small/Medium and Large/X-Large.
We’re both wearing the smaller size in the photos throughout this Rumpl poncho review.
Snaps at the side help stop it from flapping around too much once you have it on, but it’s obviously not designed to be a slim fit – more something you can easily throw on over whatever you’re wearing to get an instant layer of warm and wind-proof insulation.
If you have a smaller build you’ll definitely want to go for the smaller size, and bear in mind it will fit very loose on you, which some may not like, especially if you’re going to be doing something active while wearing it, or standing by a grill or open flame (the material is flammable and you’ll need to avoid getting too close to fires).
Pockets
The main pocket is a large, zippered pocket (aka the ‘kangaroo pouch’) for storing essentials in.
There’s also a drop-in pocket that is a good fit for your phone and other small items you may need quick access to – I believe that’s technically a beverage pocket for a bottle of beer, or similar but use it as you wish!
There are also hand pockets on either side of the zippered pocket, which are warm and where I find myself keeping my hands most of the time when wearing it.
Like the blankets, the poncho is machine-washable so you don’t need to worry about it getting dirty through use and enjoyment outdoors.
Style-wise, Rumpl says you’ll look stylish AF wearing one of these ponchos. With the bright colors and puffy design, you’ll definitely get noticed – you can decide whether style really factors into your buying decisions 🙂
