Jaybird VISTA Review 2021: Editor’s Choice Award Winner

The popularity of wireless headphones for running has exploded within the last couple of years, but up until now, they all came with drawbacks including connectivity issues, excessive weight, and short battery life. This has all changed with the release of the Jaybird VISTA earbuds. Jaybird VISTA true wireless earbuds have an extended battery life of 32 hours, are IPX7 waterproof, crushproof, and are the lightest, most comfortable true wireless headphones we have ever tested. This Jaybird VISTA review shares more of what these wireless earbuds are capable of, including unique design features that improve their usability far beyond the RUN XT, Jaybird’s last true wireless earbuds.

Now that you know what sets the Jaybird VISTA earbuds apart, let’s get into the finer details, and why I have awarded them an Editor’s Choice Award for best wireless headphones for running, and ultrarunning.

What’s the Jaybird VISTA sound quality like?

The sound quality of the Jaybird VISTA is impressive, to say the least. In my opinion, the VISTA has the best audio quality of all Jaybird wireless headphones to date. The tips of the buds create a secure and well-sealed fit that allows improved audio precision, and less harmonic distortion, leading to a wonderful balance of great sound and warm bass. In the box, you’ll find different tips to choose from depending on your ear shape and size, this will ensure the best quality seal for your ear shape and the most immersive experience possible.

Presets in the Jaybird App

The audio is so crisp and immersive right out the box, but what makes Jaybird earbuds extra special is that you can quickly apply customized equalizer presets using the Jaybird App. The preset I use is called “The Perfect Balance”, which gives me an enhanced, well-rounded bass which makes electronic and dance music sound awesome.

The Jaybird App also offers a quick hearing test which plays some tones to you, asking you to turn them up until you hear them. Once complete, you get your own personalized base preset applied, which you can then tweak to further enhance your listening. You can tweak the earbud button assignments within the app too, for things like a ‘double-tap’ for next song or ‘right tap’ to answer calls, for example.

Jaybird VISTA Pairing process

The connection strength/quality between the Jaybird VISTA earbuds and my phone has been rock solid. I believe this is down to the company’s latest JBS1 wireless technology which gives these earbuds best-in-class RF connectivity.

I also noticed during the initial setup process that pairing the Jaybird VISTA to my iPhone was much faster than previous generation Jaybird headphones. To pair the Jaybird earbuds to your phone, place the earbuds in the charging case and tap the small button inside. This process is so much easier and faster than it used to be.

Audio and connection quality for phone calls with these Jaybird headphones is very clear, responsive and also in stereo. I have experienced no lag at all while using these earbuds for phone calls. I know this because I received a rather annoying telemarketing call while out on a run! haha.

Is the Jaybird VISTA good for running?

They have been designed with outdoor sports in mind so yes, and in my experience using them, they are hands down the best true wireless headphones for running. Here are 5 reasons why Jaybird VISTA earbuds are great for running:

Jaybird VISTA earbuds - true wireless headphones review trail running trail and kale wm 15
VISTA fits comfortably and securely

1. Lightweight and secure fit

The Jaybird VISTA earbuds only weigh 6 grams (0.2 oz.) and the shape of the earbuds offer a really secure in-ear fit. You’ll probably never worry about an earbud dropping out while running ever again. That has been a problem for me while running with other true wireless earbuds.

2. Jaybird VISTA earbuds are comfortable

Because the Jaybird VISTAs are extra lightweight and fits so well, they are really comfortable to wear for long periods of time. This is a feature that marathon runners, ultrarunners, and hikers are going to love about these earbuds.

The case of the Jaybird VISTA earbuds is small enough to conveniently stash away, and very robust

3. Jaybird VISTA earbuds have a 32-hour battery life

By using the earbuds independently (i.e. one bud at a time), you can extend battery life up to 32 hours, which is music to my ears as an ultrarunner! Jaybird VISTA will last 6 hours on one charge, plus an extra 10 hours via the charging case, which is small and light enough to stash away during a run (see photo below).

  3. Fi GPS Dog Collar (Kepler's GPS activity tracking collar) Use code TK25 for $25 OFF

4. IPX7 waterproof, sweat-proof and crush-proof

With this kind of durability, there’s no need to worry about getting caught in a storm, accidentally washing an earbud with your sports gear, or accidentally standing on one. I haven’t personally tested the ‘crush-proof’ feature, though.

5. Jaybird VISTA earbuds use their ‘JBS1’ connectivity

A stable connection means that your music won’t drop out, which was a problem with the older generation, Jaybird RUN.

Jaybird VISTA Battery Life

For true wireless earbuds, being able to get 32 hours of use is pretty incredible. To get a full 32 hours of use you are required to use the earbuds independently, charging the one not in use while the other one is in your ear. As standard, while using both wireless earbuds at the same time, Jaybird VISTA battery life can last for 6 hours on one charge.

The Jaybird Vista’s charging case conveniently stashes away in small pockets.

To get an extra 10 hours you’ll need to have the charging case with you, which is small and light enough to conveniently stash in your pocket or hydration pack during a fastpacking adventure or ultramarathon. There’s also a quick-charge feature that provides 1 hour of battery life for only 5 minutes of charge time. Useful if you forget to charge your headphones before a run. The case is easily charged using the included USB-C cable.

Is the Jaybird VISTA waterproof?

Yes, these true wireless earbuds have an IPX7 waterproof rating, so the should survive even in the worst weather conditions. This is a pretty essential feature for trail runners because mountain weather can be so unpredictable. Jaybird VISTA‘s impressive durability makes them a great investment.

How much does Jaybird VISTA cost?

Jaybird VISTA is priced at $179.99 from Jaybirdsport.com. In my opinion, this is great value for money for premium true wireless earbuds with long-lasting durability for running and other sports in particular.

  1. Hey there,

I heard that these headphones don’t play your music very loud… could you clarify if this is true or not please? Also, how is the noise isolation? Please let me know! They seem like the perfect pair for me.

    Thank you!

    • Hey Sab,

It’s the complete opposite in my opinion, sound output is very impressive! Noise isolation is very good too. There’s no noise cancelling tech in these, but the outside noise gets blocked very well.

      -Alastair

    • I had this issue as well with the firmware that came out if the box. Once I downloaded the app it immediately updated and I noticed a huge difference in max volume. That was my only issue with them and I almost returned them. So glad I didn’t. These earbuds are seriously amazing.

    • If android I experienced the same . However found if you go to your bluetooth settings while connected on main bluetooth settings click advanced settings and click sync volume . That should fix that issue

  2. Great Review. Along the same lines as the previous Comment, pls advise on the volume/sound output of phone calls. I’ve owned other wireless earbuds where one can barely hear the other party. Thank you!

    • Thanks Scott. Volume/sound output is very good for phone calls. I’m surprised how good it is considering the microphone is in your ear and not infront of your mouth. Smart tech!
      -Alastair

  3. Thanks for great review. Can you compare the sound quality with sennheiser true wireless earbuds?
I have one pair of sennheiser but didn’t fit well for me. So I want to change it.
What do you think about it? Will it be a huge sound quality different between them?
    Thanks,

  4. Hi there, sorry I haven’t tried the sennheiser but I’m pretty sure you won’t be disappointed with the sound quality of the VISTA. They are very good ??

  5. I’ve just received these and on my first run found that they thud in my ears on every step making it hard to hear the music properly and it’s extremely off putting. Think I’ll be returning them.

  6. Hi!

Great review! Obviously the earplugs are made for running in mind. However, in terms of gym activity/activity where you move around a lot (weightlifting, crossfit etc.), do you think the earplugs would stay in place or fall out? Also, would you rate the Jaybird above the Jabra Elite Active 65t?

    • Hey Erik,

I don’t think you’ll have any issues with theses falling out, they stay put very effectively. I don’t have any experience with the Jabra so can’t comment on them unfortunately.

      Best,
      Alastair

  7. Hi Alistair, great review, just out of interest what IPhone do you have ? I had the Tarah Pro’s and ended up returning them as the sound quality was to say the least shit! so much so I thought there has to be something wrong with them. I returned them and upgraded to the Vista’s and same sound terrible ! Troubleshooted some more and tried them with my wife’s iPhone 6 and Wow the sound was like a 1000 times better. My iPhone is a 10xr and still sounds average but slightly improved since I’m not using the Jaybird app anymore. I am stumped as to why the sound is so bad and I desperately want for these to work with my iPhone 10.

    Any ideas ?? Thanks Dave

    • Hi David,
I have the iPhone XS. Maybe there is an issue with your iPhone if you’re getting the same result with both headphones yet they’re ok on your wife’s phone. Otherwise, have you updated the jaybird app, jaybird headphones firmware, and iphone software all to the latest builds? The sound is even better when used in conjunction with an EQ preset in the Jaybird App.
      -ALastair

    • Dave, I’ve just had a thought… make sure you have the Jaybird app running on your phone and you definitely have a sound profile turned on. The difference in sound quality is huge! I use a preset called “The Perfect Balance”, and it sounds epic.
      -Alastair

      • If android I experienced the same . However found if you go to your bluetooth settings while connected on main bluetooth settings click advanced settings and click sync volume . That should fix that issue

  8. Thanks for the review. I have the Jaybird Run and find that when I listen to an audio book and have a training program like Runkeeper going in the background, I don’t hear the Runkeeper audio cues. Do you know of this problem was fixed in the Jaybird Vista?
